ATD Detroit Study Groups provide members with a collaborative and supportive environment to deepen their knowledge, prepare for professional certifications, and connect with peers who share similar career goals. Whether you’re working toward your CPTD®, APTD®, or want to expand your expertise in talent development, our study groups offer structure, accountability, and community to help you succeed.
Study Groups are member-led learning cohorts designed to help participants:
Prepare for ATD certification exams such as the Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD®) and Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD®)
Explore ATD’s Talent Development Capability Model™ in depth
Strengthen understanding of core topics such as instructional design, leadership development, coaching, learning technologies, performance improvement, and more
Build a professional network of peers committed to continuous learning
Each study group meets virtually or in person for a series of structured sessions that blend independent study, group discussion, and peer-to-peer learning.

Each Study Group typically includes:
Weekly or biweekly sessions focused on specific sections of the ATD Capability Model™
Facilitated discussions led by experienced professionals or certified members
Practice questions, case studies, and group activities to reinforce learning
Flexible formats that accommodate diverse learning styles and schedules
Study groups generally run two to three times per year based on member demand. Session schedules, materials, and registration details are announced on the ATD Detroit Events Calendar.

ATD Detroit Study Groups are more than exam prep—they’re a community of practice designed to help you grow with confidence. Connect with others, deepen your expertise, and take the next step toward achieving your career goals in talent development.
Most study groups meet weekly or biweekly for 8–12 weeks. Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes, depending on the group size and topic. Members are also encouraged to dedicate additional personal study time between sessions.
Study groups are open to both members and non-members. However, ATD Detroit members receive discounted registration and access to additional resources, networking events, and leadership development opportunities.
Participants use ATD’s official APTD® and CPTD® preparation guides, along with supplemental materials such as:

Practice questions and sample case studies
Group-created study tools and shared notes
ATD Detroit’s curated list of recommended articles, webinars, and podcasts
Yes. Most facilitators and mentors are ATD-certified professionals (APTD® or CPTD®) who have successfully completed the exam and volunteer to guide others through the process.
All sessions are recorded (when applicable) and materials are shared through a group workspace or learning platform, so you can easily catch up on what you missed.
ATD Detroit members: Often free or offered at a reduced rate
Non-members: A small participation fee may apply

If you hold an APTD® or CPTD® certification, you can volunteer as a study group leader or mentor. This is a great way to give back to the community, earn recertification points, and strengthen your leadership skills.
